Summary on Grant Application Form |
About half of the 30M scrap tyres produced annually in the UK are dumped or landfilled. To mitigate the scale of the tyre waste problem, this project seeks to investigate the use of Crumb Rubber Modifier (CRM) from tyre waste in asphalt for pavement applications. The research aims to study the effect of various material and process variables on the interaction between CRM and bitumen to achieve a basic understanding of asphalt-rubber binders. Thermal and rheological properties of the hybrid materials will be measured to assess the nature and extent of property change resulting from CRM-bitumen interaction. The proposal aims to develop laboratory mix design and assessment criteria for CRM binder-aggregate mixtures. Field trials with selected CRM mixture formulations are proposed to be undertaken and practical guidelines developed for the handling of CRM mixtures on site. Fundamental properties will be used to evaluate mix performance and correlation with CRM binder properties will be attempted to identify the impact of CRM modification.Relevant industrial organisations have been identified to collaborate on a formal basis. The project complies with the EPSRC Waste Minimisation Programme mission and, if successful, will help achieve EU target levels of increased waste tyre recycling rates.
