Metalloporphyrins, including such important complexes as chlorophyll and haemoglobin, play an important role in biological processes such as photosynthesis and respiration. They are also potential building blocks for future devices due to their attractive electronic and optical properties and their tendency to form ordered structures in the solid state. The design of new optoelectronic devices using thin films of metalloporphyrins requires a knowledge of the structure and properties of the porphyrin-solid interface. This proposal will investigate the adsorption of zincporphyrin molecules on single crystal surfaces, and the interaction of the adsorbed molecules leading to the formation of two dimensional structures, using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in conjunction with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). By using porphyrins with different side-chain substituents attached to the macrocycle, it should be possible to assemble two dimensional porphyrin, molecular films with predesigned structures. The electronic transitions leading to the adsorption of visible light by porphyrins are also sensitive to the nature of the side-chain substituent, and are thus expected to be dependent on the intermolecular bonding at surfaces. By combining STM and EELS, we therefore expect to be able to establish the structure-property relationship of adsorbed porphyrin films.
