A new programme, involving the modification and development of an optimised conventional TEM configuration for representative ultra-high spatial resolution microanalysis of solids, will be initiated in parallel with the development and refinement of high resolution ESI and analysis techniques for the nanochemical characterisation of a wide range of materials covering Foresight priorities. Additionally the proposal aims to develop and disseminate protocols for a) rapid high resolution phase and chemical state mapping using ESI andb) synergising the results of a high spatial resolution PEELS analysis using spatial difference spectroscopy, PEELS/EDX linescans and HREM in the study of internal interfaces and nanostructural features of importance to a wide range of materials properties. Invaluable progress will be achieved in a large number of interdisciplinary materials research programmes spanning structural ceramics, electroceramics, carbon materials, fibres, metals, nanomaterials, cements, catalysts, biomaterial coatings, composites, polymers, photonic materials and minerals, all of which are hindered by the lack of nanoscale characterisation capability. An optimised analytical CTEM, capable of high resolution ESI, PEELS and EDX, complete with integrated ex-situ reaction cell facilities will provide valuable microstructural data, critical to the success of these projects. This facility will also support users from both academia and industry throughout the North East.
