Summary on Grant Application Form |
We intend to determine which urological procedures can benefit most from robotic aids to surgery, and produce a robotic device for surgery in the most promising areas. The robot will be a small 4-axis device capable of handling a number of interchangeable surgical tools, appropriate for each task (e.g. ultra sound transducers, resectoscopes, brachytherapy radioactive source implanters, etc.).We will develop soft-tissue models from medical images of the organs involved and from the surgical techniques produce computer based surgical plans which model the volumes to be treated and methods of robot access.Urological, and soft tissue surgery in general, provide problems of tissue movement and distortion both natural and as a result of forces applied by surgical tools. We intend to develop methods of tracking tissue movement by ultrasound imaging, and distortion of tissue models to determine tissue movement enabling treatment models to be updated. We will develop control strategies giving the surgeon direct control over the robot's movements, but preventing him from moving outside of pre-defined regions, ensuring patient safety. To enable effective interaction between surgeon and robot we will develop appropriate human-computer interfaces.
