Summary on Grant Application Form |
Distributed engineering partner interaction and integration via the common-model based environment will result in (i) a significant reduction in implementation costs and (ii) greater production system agility. A practical common-model based automation approach has yet to be implemented and adopted by the automotive manufacturing sector. Such a development requires new research to thoroughly assess its capabilities from business and engineering perspectives. Also required is a concerted effort involving manufacturing end users, machine and control system builders and vendors of current generation machine components. This project will conduct the necessary research and via a collaborative effort of influencial parties in the field will develop and apply a common-model based environment (based on the CB paradigm) to the life cycle engineering of transfer and assembly machines used in automotive engine manufacture. The environment will be implemented and tested under conditions which thoroughly investigate its practicability in the field. Also project partners will investigate means of achieving a broad based industrial exploitation of the environment.
