Summary on Grant Application Form
We plan to extend the range of magnetic field and temperature which can be used in condensed matter physics research by developing a combined system of small bore magnets and miniaturized cryogenics. The magnets will be constructed using special high strength composite materials with advanced winding techniques developed in-house. The crostats will also be constructed in-house and will explore the range of bore sizes and tube materials capable of functioning under extreme conditions. A parallel physics programme aimed at interband magneto-optical measurements on strongly interacting electron systems will be pursued as a typical programme which will highlight the measurement and instrumentation needs of such miniaturised systems.
