The fluid motion prevailing in the bearing chamber of an aero-engine is complex due to the presence c two fluid phases enclosed by high speed rotating walls. The presence of air and oil in a chamber with walls rotating at high speed can result in oil fires as well as the deterioration of the oil lubricat: function. Conventional optical anemometers such as Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA), Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV) and Phase Doppler Anemometry (PDA) are incapable of obtaining all the information sought as well as being practically impossible to use due to the lack of optical access to the geometric investigated. Consequently, the objective is to develop a miniature instrument that will visualise an( measure non-intrusively the velocity, particle size and concentration of the multiphase flow in a small space confined between rotating surfaces. The ultimate aim is to reveal the fundamental flow phenomena prevailing and recommend improvements for better engine performance.The device will be based on the PIV technique with the added ability of measuring particle sizes and concentration and will be miniaturised to allow measurements to be first conducted on a specially developed model scale test rig then implemented on the full-scale test rig.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Keywords describing areas of proposalInstrumentation, Lasers, Optics, Sensors, Software Engineering
