Summary on Grant Application Form |
A new opportunity is opening up for nuclear structure physics, through the development of radioactive beams. The removal of the stable-beam constraint brings with it the need to develop highly sensitive radiation-detection systems. The present proposal forms part of a UK and European collaboration to construct and exploit state-of-the-art gamma-ray and charged-particle spectrometers, coupled together for optimised performance. New aspects of nuclear structure will thereby be open for study. In particular, this proposal seeks to explore and explain the behaviour of nuclei near the proton drip-line, where additional nucleon-nucleon pairing modes are predicted; and the behaviour of neutron-rich nuclei that are predicted to form part of a unique 'island' of nuclear isomerism.
