Summary on Grant Application Form |
Proof of concept experiments have already been carried out for an analyser which displays the total velocity distribution of a neutral gas (number density as a function of speed and direction), for a particular molecular mass, in a single shot. We propose to build a general purpose, higher resolution version of this analyser which can be used to analyse the mass and velocity distributions of gaseous species generated in a range of kinetics and dynamics experiments in both the gas and surface phases. By using a tunable dye laser as the ionisation source (instead of an electron beam) the velocity distribution measured by the analyser can be further resolved into image slices for particular rotation/vibration combinations of the gas. The analyser performance will be tested using both electron beam and laser ionisation, after which it will be used to study a range surface phenomena which require both velocity and internal state selection. The analyser will be designed as a stand alone device that can be used in a wide range of experiments involving low pressure gases. Its ease of use and wealth of information will open up new avenues of research in reaction kinetics and dynamics research.
