Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this proposal is to extend significantly the present boundaries of the chemistry of organic compounds of the lanthanide elements (Ln). We have the following objectives relating to quite new classes of compounds (the existence of which is based on detailed feasibility studies). These will be (I) Ln(II) complexes, particularly of La, Ce, Nd, Pr and Lu; (ii) cationic Ln(II) complexes, initially of Sm, Eu, and Yb; (iii) Ce(IV)-Ce(III) mixed valence clusters; and (iv) hydrido-bridged binuclear Ce(III) and related complexes. In the light of their novelty, types (i) - (iv) will receive detailed characterisation, using single crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic measurements, spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential electrolysis coupled with EPR spectroscopy. The reactivity of compounds (I)-(iv) will be examined, particularly as powerful reducing agents (i and iv), metal-centred electrophiles (ii), and oxidising agents or optical sensors (iii).
