At present only 9.2% of the annual arisings of 53.5 million tons of construction and demolition wastes (C&D waste) is directly recovered. Many contractors take all C&D waste to landfill for fear that contaminants make it unsuitable for recycling. Effective methods of risk assessment and a quality assurance system for recycled C&D wastes are needed. This project aims to develop a methodology which will facilitate increased recycling of C&D wastes. It will sample material in C&D waste flows for laboratory analysis will develop an improved sampling method suitable for both the spatial and the temporal variations in both materials and contaminants. An improved sampling method will be trailed with recycling partners. Standard leaching tests will compare the mobility of contaminants in C&D waste fills with that in normal soils. Risk assessment methods will be evaluated by tests on building sites with contractor partners. Trials of the chosen sampling and risk methodologies will be made with contractor partners. A manual and sampling methodology for use by contractors and geotechnical laboratories will be presented to practitioner groups at workshops and the final recommendations will be published as a BRE digest for wide circulation in the industry.
