Chiral molecules adsorbed on surfaces can exhibit new phenomena which arise because the physics of chirality in two dimensions is very different from that in three. For example, chiral molecules on an isotropic surface can show huge intensity differences in second harmonic generation with respect to +45 and -45 degrees linear polarisation states. However, a major criticism of these second harmonic optical activity (SHOA) studies is that such chiral adsorbate/-substrate interfaces are usually not very well analysed. A complete characterisation of these chiral interfaces by appropriate surface science probes is required for the SHOA data to adopt any analytically significant value. We, therefore, propose to develop a computer controlled instrument for novel studies of chiral molecules adsorbed onto well characterised chiral and achiral surfaces by interfacing, for the first time, a UHV apparatus with such a specially designed SHOA probe. The overall performance of the instrument will be tested and evaluated by performing different benchmark experiments which will advance the understanding of the interactions of chiral and achiral surfaces to unprecedented detail, thereby placing the applicants at the forefront of surface science investigations into chiral adsorption and other surface phenomena.
