Summary on Grant Application Form |
The main focus of this proposal is to design, construct, instrument and characterise two highly segmented germanium detectors, with particular emphasis on the tracking of Compton scattered events through the individual detector elements. A major part of the project is to devise and implement the algorithms required to reconstruct the Compton scattered events through their 'tracks' between the different detector elements, and to model using Monte Carlo techniques, how to maximise the effectiveness of the new detector for a given detector geometry. The major benefit of this novel type of device is a combination of increased photo-peak efficiency, coupled, in the case of in-beam spectroscopy, with an improved energy resolution following a reduction in the Doppler broadening affects associated with a better position sensitivity of the initial gamma-ray interaction in the crystal. It is intended that in the final phase of the project, the instrument will be used to make high resolution Coulomb excitation measurements of high exotic nuclei following relativistic projectile fragmentation.
