Summary on Grant Application Form |
Amenable operator algebras are analytic objects - self adjoint algebras of operators on hilbert spaces for which the unitary groups are amenable. The possibility of classifying (simple) amenable C*-algebras by K-theoretic invariants is striking and one of the most important aspects of current research in operator algebras together with subfactor theory initiated by Jones, and non-commutative free random variables initiated by Voiculescu. The broad aim of this project is the classification of amenable C*-algebras in terms of invariants which would yield new insight into their structure (such as automorphsism groups) but also give a better understanding of technical aspects and tools such as the Rohklin property, homotoping unitaries, singular foliations or orbifolds which have a wider interest in operator algebras and related fields - as already shown in recent exchange of ideas from subfactor theory.
