Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project will develop methodologies for studying the solubility and diffusion (permeability) of mixed gases through polymer films in order to relate processing and structure to barrier properties. Most importantly we will develop a methodology for assessing new methods of processing materials with respect to enhanced barrier properties. There are two aspects to the proposed research that have relevance to beneficiaries in the packaging sector. Most obviously we will develop methods to measure solubility and diffusion (permeability) of mixed gases through polymer films. Furthermore we will relate permeability to morphology and therefore have predictable processing-property relations; this is currently a problem with many packaging materials. An understanding of how morphology affects processing and properties will have many beneficiaries in UK industry as the market for packaging continues to expand. The proposal maps directly on to the Foresight technical priority of improving the processing of existing materials. The research could be expected to produce patentable findings that can be exploited commercially in terms of the control and optimisation of processing and properties of polymers and composites.
