The synthesis and characterisation of co-ordination complexes (star, solitaire and Gemini porphyrazines) derived from prophyrazine-diol, tetraol and octaol derivatives will be examined. Metal ions which are both co-ordinated within the porphyrazine cavity and by the peripheral catechol like units will systematically varied with representative diamagnetic metallic entities [Ni(II), Zn(II), Si(IV), Ti(IV), PD(II), Pt(II)] and/or representative paramagnetic and/or redox-active metallic entities [Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Mo, Ru, Gd, Hf, Re, Os]. These complexes will be characterised by spectroscopy including, when appropriate EPR, electrochemistry and X-ray crystallography. The research will be extended to the synthesis of porphyrazinediol binaries and other higher crystallography. The research will be extended to the synthesis of porphyrazinediol binaries and other higher order complexes and to a study of metalloporphyrazinequinones and their attendant electrochemistry. Several potential applications of porphyrazine complexes will be examined. The development of UV-vis absorption/fluorescence porphyraxine sensors for the selective detection of metal ion contaminants will be undertaken Porphyrazinediamine single oxygen generators will be optimised and assayed in the photodynamic therapy of cancer. Long wavelength absorbing porphyrazine complexes in soft tissue imaging and as far-IR pigments will be assayed.
