Summary on Grant Application Form |
It is intended to develop a smart instrument, incorporating novel solid electrolyte sensors with capability for monitoring S02, S03, CO, HCs, C02, 02, HC1, NOx and humidity in exhaust gases using software with fuzy logic and neural network properties such that the system is capable of learning gas profiles, and overcome many of the problems of cross-sensitivity and be able to adapt to any measuring situations and provide instantaneous read-outs at low cost. Data presentation will be carried out by a PC running Windows and Labview with Neurolab neural network which can be re-arranged for an embedded PC. At the end of the three year project, a valuable prototype will be available with a great potential for applications in environmental monitoring. The opportunity to be able to consolidate several years of intensive research both in the areas of solid electrolyte gas sensors and support electronics packaging with additional focused research and interfacing of several sub-components into one instrument can be realised with support from EPSRC within this very timely framework.
