Summary on Grant Application Form |
We will purchase a new type of 4-mirror, optical furnace to grow high quality, large volume, single crystals of a variety of novel oxide materials for neutron and x-ray scattering, muon-spin rotation, magnetotransport, magnetisation measurements. The crystals will underpin and enhance existing EPSRC-funded research into strongly correlated electron systems. The materials to be studied are low dimensional transition metal oxides (nickelates, manganites and cuprates), and perovskite ferroelectrics. At present, single crystals of the appropriate size and purity of these materials are not available in the UK. The proposal will help to develop new sample preparation techniques in the UK, and ties in with existing EPSRC research grants both in Oxford, Bristol and elsewhere, and with the EPSRC's investment in novel instrumentation for single crystals, such as the MAPS spectrometer at ISIS.
