Summary on Grant Application Form |
The most developed adaptive optical systems are employed in astronomy and cost millions of pounds for each custom system. There are a number of potential applications of adaptive optics in industrial inspection and processing, laser technology, microscopy, and other subjects, which require the cost of adaptive optics to be lowered significantly. Of the three keys parts of the AO system (sensing, control and correction), the area of wavefront sensing is currently lagging the rapid developments of new compensation devices (such as micromachined silicon and liquid crystals) and control systems, despite the fact that wavefront sensing is a very old technology (for example, interferometry). In this research programme we shall prototype wavefront sensors that potentially could be very low cost, and test them with modern deformable devices such as micromachined membrane mirrors. The purpose of this work is to provide underpinning support that will result in our being capable to make specific wavefront sensors in the future, in response to requests from end-users for turn-key low-cost adaptive optics systems.
