Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project is proposed to study the reactive sputtering process of very high magnetic moment Fe-N soft magnetic films. It falls exactly within the current priority theme, advanced hard and soft magnetic materials, of the Advanced Magnetics Programme. The aim of the project is to establish that the proposed route is viable for producing giant moment Fe-N films. An in-situ plasma diagnosis and control system will be employed for the study and real-time control of the reactive sputtering of Fe-N films. The Reactaflo provides a method of tracking and controlling the reactive sputtering process in real time, so that any deviations from the process specifications can be monitored and corrected in-situ to ensure process consistency and hence the consistency of coating composition and properties. By combining this technique with the use of special substrates, in-situ and post deposition heat treatment, microstructural analysis and magnetic measurements, it is anticipated that advances in the deposition process for the giant magnetic moment films can be achieved. The success of the project will lead to scientific and technological advances in the development of advanced soft magnetic materials for recording head applications and will add to the competitiveness of UK magnetic storage industry.
