The intention is to construct a novel instrument that will interrogate the chemical and physical properties of single unsupported nano or microparticle in the size range 10 nm - few um. The apparatus will allow microparticle(s) to be levitated within the confines of a quadrupole ion trap. The trap will have the facility to act as a mass spectrometer, and mass spectra will be recorded of material that has been ablated from the particle surface. A range of methods are described for performing spectroscopic measurements on surface-bound species, and all of these techniques offer routes to studying the surface chemistry and chemical composition of nanoparticles. The apparatus will also have a capability for measuring some important physical properties of metallic and semi-conductor particles.Initial applications will focus on polymer microparticles for which there are immediate requirements for techniques which can characterise the surface composition. However, future applications cover areas where particulate material can be either beneficial (catalysis, aerosols, paints etc.) or hazardous (smog, combustion, welding fumes etc.).
