This is a collaborative, coherent research programme involving three of the most active and highly regarded research groups in the area of MO storage in the UK. The aim is to design, fabricate and test advanced MO recording configurations, based around MSR and MAMMOS structures, that circumvent the density limits placed on conventional systems by the classical optical diffraction limit.Film and disk fabrication, using RE-TM alloys, will be carried out at Queen's (Prof Ron Atkinson). A theoretical study of the complex MSR and MAMMOS write and read processes, using computer simulations, will be carried out at Manchester (dr David Wright). Experimental investigations of the dynamic domain processes involved in the writing and reading of data will be undertaken by Plymouth using time-resolved and near-field microscopy (Prof Warwick Clegg). Experimental measurements of recording performance will be made by both Manchester and Plymouth. The results of these theoretical and experimental studies will be used to design optimised MSR and MAMMOS configurations for use at short-wavelengths to enable storage at the highest possible densities (600Gbits/sq.in.). these optimised structures will be fabricated and the limits of their recording performance determined.
