Summary on Grant Application Form |
B-diketonates are one of the most versatile and widely studies ligand systems in Inorganic Chemistry. The interest in these species has led to them finding applications in a variety of areas. In an unfunded pilot study we have developed a range of As and Sb substituted dionate compounds which we have used as ligands in the preparation of several novel complexes. These have shown both similarities and differences to their B-diketonte counterparts. We now propose to dull extend this preliminary work by developing high yield, synthetic routes to a full range of Group 15 substituted dionates. We will systematically explore their use as ligands in the formation of transition, main group and lanthanide metal complexes. In addition, the use of the heterodionates as precursors to previously inaccessible organo-group 15 specie will be explored. Once developed, any heterodionate complex with suitable properties will be tested as a precursor for the CVD of thin films of metals or metal pnictides. It is envisaged that other aspects of the programme will be exploitable by organometallic, inorganic and organic chemists; industries reliant on lanthanide phosphors and those that currently employ B-diketonate complexes as catalysts. This project will provide valuable experiences to the requested PGRS.
