Fatigue crack propagation behaviour at elevated temperature will be investigated and modelled in a new UK developed Ni base superalloy. In particular, the influence of critical mechanical variables including cyclic frequency, dwell at peak loads, load ratio and loading rate will be examined. Previous research on earlier alloys has indicated that such information is vital in fully understanding material behaviour and in developing predictive tools for safe operation and life assessment of gas turbine components.The effects of specimen and crack geometry on crack growth behaviour will be studied since significant discrepancies in crack growth rate and crack morphology have been observed between different test pieces (eg compact tension and corner crack specimens), particularly when time dependent fracture mechanisms predominate. Finite element models will be developed to assess the constraint effects on crack driving forces and to gain a mechanistic understanding of the problem.Predictive tools are required to achieve significant reductions in terms of time and money spent on rig testing. The development of such tools relies on a fundamental understanding of the key individual factors that contribute to final failure. The successful completion of the proposed project will be a useful step in this direction.
