The first part of the proposed research will be the development and verification of a suitable three dimensional electromagnetic field simulation software tool which will allow efficient analysis of suspended substrate stripline circuits on a PC. The code will be integrated into AutoCAD Mechanical Desktop. The tool will then be used to develop accurate circuit models for the structures most commonly used in the manufacture of filters and multiplexers in suspended substrate stripline. These models will provide linear circuit simulators with the ability to accurately model such filters and multiplexers up to frequencies of 40GHz enabling 'right first time' designs through a design-simulation-optimisation procedure. The new models will also allow designers to utilise structures which have hitherto been avoided because of the inability of simulators to model them adequately, but which could improve the performance of the filters and multiplexers at these higher frequencies.
