Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal is to investigate the effects of the interplay of strong local electron interactions with the interactions arising from coupling of the electrons with phonon modes, using the Numerical renormalization group method (NRG). The calculations would be set up first of all for impurity models, where there are a number of interesting questions that have not been fully explored. The advantage of the NRG approach is that it can be used to calculate the thermodynamic and dynamic behaviour, and can deal with both interactions on a similar basis provided that they both involve local couplings. Furthermore, the results can be generalised to lattice models by using the dynamic mean filed approach. This involves the addition of a self-consistency constraint to the impurity problem such that the parameters determining the effective impurity model have to calculated by interaction. The Mott metal-insulator transition has been studied using the approach for the particle-hole symmetric Hubbard model. With this generalisation the combined effects of the strong correlation and the electron-phonon interaction in lattice models can be studied. Of particular interest is the effect of such terms near the metal-insulator transition.
