Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme will develop microwave (photo) electrochemistry as an in situ method for the study of the dynamics of electrons and holes involved in electrochemical processes. Building on established expertise in Bath, the main objective is to extend the time resolution of microwave electrochemistry down to the sub-microsecond region in order to study electron transport and transfer in/at illuminated electrodes. This will involve construction of a Ka-band microwave reflectivity system with a Nd-YAG laser source for photo-excitation. Time resolved laser stimulated microwave reflectance will be used to study photoelectrochemical reactions at the interfaces between bulk/nanocrystalline electrodes and electrolytes. The time scale of interest extends from ns to ms. Signal averaging will be used to enhance the S/N ratio to allow small optical perturbations to be used to characterise slower processes. The combination of the two methods will span 8 decades of time, allowing us to characterise the full range of processes (transport/trapping/recombination/transfer) involving photoexcited charge carriers. Microwave methods will also be developed for in situ study of slower processes in conducting polymer and electrochromic systems. The microwave response will be correlated to electrochemically induced changes in the optical and electrical properties of the materials.
