Lasers are encountered throughout science and engineering. In most cases, the output beams have simple intensity distributions best described by Hermite-Gaussin or similar polynomials.We identified that it may be possible to design a laser with an output that has a fractal cross-section (e.g. Sierpinski Gasket). The key intracavity component is a computer-generated hologram that increases the fractal dimension of the intensity profile upon each round trip of the cavity. The smallest feature is limited only by the wavelength of the light and not the scale of the hologram.Although this research is principally curiosity driven, such a laser may have applications in photolithography where aerials are no made with fractal patterns for mobile phones.
