Summary on Grant Application Form |
The use of large aspect ratio Nd: YAG planar waveguides as a route to high beam quality lasers at < 250 W power will be investigated. A newly developed technique for efficient face pumping of the thin active layer with laser diode arrays will be applied to CW pumping for the first time, producing waveguide modules of 50W and 250W output capability. Single and double sided pumping will be developed to raise the pump power density to 100 W/sq.cm in this area scaleable laser format. The modules will be used for experiments on the control of thermally-induced refractive index and depolarisation limits to beam quality by step-index waveguiding, and on power amplification of ns, long pulse and cw beams with MOPA configurations. Mode selectivity of hybrid unstable-waveguide resonators will be enhanced to produce power oscillators of high quality beam quality. Active and passive Q-switching will be investigated to generate laser pulse trains. Collaborative work will investigate the applications of high power planar waveguide lasers in a range of applications including non-linear optics, pulse train control, high speed marking and precision processing of materials.
