We propose the further development of THz time domain spectroscopic techniques by increasing both bandwidth and time resolution by an order of magnitude to enable its application to problems in semiconductor physics, particularly those underpinning the development of future coherent THz sources. Although presenting a technological challenge, this is especially timely in view of the recent rapid progress on mid infrared lasers and the interest in applications of THz technology such as imaging and environmental monitoring. The research programme has four main themes; (I) Instrument development to increase generation and detection bandwhich of single cycle spectroscopy from 3 THz to 50 THz and time resolution from approximately 300 fs to 20 fs. (ii) Study of inter- and intra-subband coherence and population dynamics in quantum well devices with potential for injection lasting in region below 15THz, exploring affect of structure, charge injection and temperature. (iii) Study of coherent phenomena in cold and hot, two and three dimensional plasmas. Development of techniques for efficient antenna coupling of THz radiation to short, bounded plasmas. Investigation of whether conditions for observation of plasma instabilities, necessary for THz gain, can be established. (iv) Investigation of coupling of THz radiation to semiconductor cavities and microcavities.
