The motivation for the work proposed here stems from two complimentary requirements. Increasing demands require that future electric motors will have flexible rotors: such a trend will intensify the need for condition monitoring and fault diagnosis systems. In any such system it is highly advantageous to seek reduction in data on which maintenance judgements have to be made and an important way of achieving this objective is by the elimination of those components of the vibration which are readily understood. In the work proposed here the effects of rotor bends and unbalance will be analysed by considering the total forces acting on the rotor. The results of this calculation are estimates of the unbalance at an appropriate number of planes and the modal contributions of any bend. This is achieved by using a nodel of the rotating component within a least square estimator to make maximum use of experimental data. Having identified the components of vibration arising from these major influences, residual terms can be examined. Furthermore, using the rotor model together with identified support properties, the method is easily extended to study other forcing mechanisms on the rotor.Keywords describing areas of proposal.Flexible rotor, Vibration,Motor,Balancing, Magnetic Bearings Beneficiaries
