Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research will capitalise on our past experience in the organometallic chemistry of transition metal complexes with sulfur ligands. We have shown in previous work that certain dinuclear molybdenum complexes can effect the cleavage of C-S bonds in thiols, thyus providing a model for the important industrial process of hydrodesulfurisation. More recently, we have demonstrated that the same complexes are capable of cleaving the C=S bonds in trithiocarbonates to form m-sulfido ligands. We now wish to diversify our study of the reactions of 1,3-dithiole-2-thiones with transition metal species in order to develop a reagent which will effect the efficient desulfurisation and coupling of these reagents to tetrathiafulvalenes. Suitable initial complexes have already been identified: they include cobalt carbonyl, mixed-metal MoCo clusters, and low-valent tungsten species.
