Summary on Grant Application Form
A number of current problems in polymer science and technology require a knowledge of the dynamical interactions in polymeric fluids with more than one component. Examples are diffusion in block co-polymer mesophases, morphology formation in microphase separation and blend compatiblisation. A key ingredient is the dependence of the local friction of a monomer of component i on the local concentration of other components j. Experimental results on block co-polymers and blends from the Minneapolis and Leeds groups to date will inform a seris of calculations done by prof Lodge with members of the Leeds polymer theory group. A likely list is: (i) reptation of polymers with highly varying local friction, (ii) their reptation in ordered microphases (iii) coupling of molecular and compositional dynamics in frictional blends (iv) extension to branched architectures. Finally the theoretical work will be used to plan a series of experiments using techniques at Leeds and elsewhere in the UK and at Minnesota for future collaboration. While in the UK, Prof Lodge will participate in the training of PG students and PDRAs in techniques for polymer dynamics.
