The aim of the project is to explore the mathematical structure of string theory. The properties of the eleven dimsional M-theory that has recently played such a prominent role will be studied. We will pursue this by examining the properties of the membranes and fivebranes of the theory and the new Matrix Theory which is a proposal for a non-perturbative definition of M-theory. D-branes will continue to be used to explore the quantum mechanics of black holes, topological field theories and mirror symmetry. Duality issues in quantum field theory will also be examined by analysing the mathematical properties of monopoles in various supersymmetric gauge theories. Intersecting branes will also be used to analyse quantum field theories.
