Biological tissues have an electrical impedance which is a function of frequency. The reason for this dependence is the fact that tissues contain components which have both resistive properties and charge storage (capacitive) properties. The development of Electrical Impedance Tomographic Spectroscopy (EITS) enabled images of tissue impedance spectra to be made. A three year pilot study has shown that neonatal lungs can be characterised using EITS and that there are very large differences between adult and neonatal lungs. The proposed project aims to develop a much simpler and improved technique and to make the necessary in-vivo measurements to enable a realistic model of neonatal lung tissue to be developed.This will be used to demonstrate that pulmonary oedema and ventilation can be investigated non-invasively in neonates and used to investigate maturational changes in lung structure.
