Magnetic materials such as NdFeB are being used in computing and electronic applications for miniaturisation. However, for economic reasons, many applications continue to use hexaferrite materials.This programme is aimed at utilising the magnetic anisotropy and morphologies of these materials to produce radially aligned, tubular magnets by extrusion. These magnets will make permanent magnet motors easier to assemble and have enhanced magnetic properties, compared to assemblies of uniaxially aligned magnetic blocks. The advantage of extrusion is that continuous lengths can be formed to close to tolerance, providing a rapid cost effective means of production.In conjunction with modelling of the flow and alignment characteristics, powders with a range of sizes and morphologies will be produced and extruded. In order to achieve a greater degree of alignment, extrusion dies will be designed, and implemented, that will generate a high intensity radial magnetic field during the extrusion process.A methodology will be developed to form magnets of superior properties using an efficient cost effective manufacturing process in agreement with the Foresight challenge. Finally, a demonstrator motor will be produced and its performance tested with respect to power to weight ratio and efficiency.
