Summary on Grant Application Form |
The need to mesure and control odours at low fluxes is an important issue in waste management which has arisen from the public's growing concern over odours which are emitted from landfills. In meeting this research proposal's objectives (described above) we shall develop and evaluate, in the laboratory and in the field odour measuring protocols which will involve: a) sampling with static flux boxes, dynamic flux boxes and directional samplers with b) analysis by a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer with odour-port facilities. Field verification of the protocols will take place at an operating and a closed landfill site during the summer and winter periods. These activities will provide odour emission rates for seasonal and temporal veriations and for surface conditions including cover type, soil depth, vegetation, gas venting/collection systems. Laboratory testing of the effectiveness of cover materials will be followed by application of measurement protocols to study odour emission rates from test areas of cover materials established at the landfill sites. The programme's results will be stored in a database which will enable analysis to be made of the selected measurement techniques and correlation of odour emission rates and patterns with the landfill site characteristics, waste inputs and types of covers.
