Summary on Grant Application Form |
Published statistics have shown that the transmission of enteric viruses through groundwater is a significant cause of morbidity worldwide. However, little is known of the transport, attenuation, and survival of viruses in groundwater; often it is assumed that viruses are attenuated by sorption to the aquifer, but this is unproved, and even if sorption is a dominant mechanism, transport may be effected by sorption onto mobile colloids. The lack of knwoledge of virus mobility is, in part, a consequence of inefficient methods for the isolation of viruses from groundwater samples. This feasibility study will assess new sorption-based methods for concentrating viruses from groundwaters in the field. During method development direct evidence of the degree of sorption to colloids will be obtained. The methods are: ultrafiltration; seeding with colloids and ultrafiltration; suspending virus-specific traps in a borehole; suspending non-specific traps in a borehole. The methods will be tried in the field, initially at sites known to be contaminated with sewage. The results will indicate virus occurrence/mobility in groundwaters, and any virus/colloid associations.
