Summary on Grant Application Form |
The interparticle forces for a number of model systems will be characterised by the use of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) in air and liquids, whereby the influence of adsorbed moisture (in gases) and ionic and other surface charges (in liquids) will be investigated. At the same time, the mechanical properties of the aggregates will be quantified by the technique of Nano-indentation. The mechanical stresses exerted on the aggregates under well-defined shear deformation and uniaxial compression will be calculated by the use of Finite Element Analysis. The above information will then be used in a Distinct Element Analysis of factors which define and influence the aggregate strength. Here, the computer simulation code TRUBAL will be used to simulate agglomerate behaviour, when subjected to various types of stress. The computer simulations will be validated by an experimental programme in collaboration with the industrial partner, using their state of the art facilities of ultra fast flow field visualisation and particle image velocimetry. The ultimate aim is to develop predictive capability for controlling aggregate behaviour based on the properties of the primary particles.
