Summary on Grant Application Form |
Complex spatio-temporal interactions of light and matter will be simulated on high-performance workstations with a view to advancing experiment and device design and to using graphical visualisation methods to motivate novel theoretical insights into the underlying physics.a) processing information with spatial solitons in semiconductor microresonators; andb) tow-dimensional atom optics. These are respectively rather applied and rather fundamental, but share surprisingly much physics and mathematics. Because both involve dynamical evolution of complex spatial structures in a planar geometry, they are ideally suited to graphical visualisation of dynamical simulations. The soliton work will augment and inform a new ESPRIT project aimed at processing information and images using arrays of such spatial solitons.2D atom optics is a novel concept closely related to Bose-Einstein condensation and atom lasers in 3D, but offers enhanced robustness, controllability and compactness, important both for fundamentals and applications. The equipment will also support several compute-intensive projects complementing, linking and/or extending these core projects, including:Quantum images and structures; nonlinear optics of semiconductors; beam quality in optical parametric oscillators; recoilinduced collective effects in light-matter interactions; and coherence in Bose-Einstein condensates.Start date: 1 March 1999-03-03 Period: 3 years
