Summary on Grant Application Form |
An intergrated visual-tactual virtual reality research will be created from the constituent parts of the requested equipment. This facility will then be used threefold.+ As a basis for research into enabling tactual technology and the human factors issues arising from it.+ To carry out research in the medical/biomechanics/rehabilitation area to get better models of the capabilities (or lack of them) of various types of patients and elderly people and to help in the design of assistive devices to overcome their difficulties in everyday living. The equipment will also be used to carry out studies in the training and occupational therapy areas.+ To further the scope of the group's research into tools and techniques to speed up and improve the design process in engineering industry. This will be done by using more tactile technology in the computer aided design of artefacts and systems and allowing designs to be virtually explored, assembled, disassembled and maintained by human manipulation giving much more realistic feedback of touch and force than hitherto available. The facility will also be used to carry out training studies whereby technicians and others can be trained to carry out manipulative tasks in a virtual environment.
