Summary on Grant Application Form |
High power fibre laser operation near 3 m is to be investigated based on new ER doped and co-doped compositions in low-phonon-energy fluoride and heavy metal oxide glasses. Near 3 m biological tissue has its strongest absorption and successful development of a fibre laser at this wavelength will be a major achievement, leading to an efficient and extremely effective medical laser. Fundamental spectroscopic and kinetic data including control of lower laser level population will be measured and computer modelling and laser simulation performed. excitation into the outer rectangular cladding will be high power diode lasers. Basic data derived in the first part of the project will be used to design research-model double-clad fibre lasers, this is to be followed by development and performance characterisation.
