Summary on Grant Application Form |
The main purpose of the proposed Bath-Cambridge-Kent-Met Office collaborative project is to advance the study of algorithms for the computational solution of the partial differetial equations with important applications, through the incorporation of qualitative techniques into the algorithm. The Cambridge contribution will centre on the extension of symplectic and Lie-group discretization techniques, which have achieved great sucess in the intergration of ODEs, to a PDEsetting. This will involve issues of algorithm design (in both PDEs and sparse numerical algebra), stability analysis and software production. Moreover, we intend to apply geometric integration techniques to the evaluation of Lyapunov exponents.A second purpose of the collaboration is to implement novel geometric integration techniques to PDEs occuring in weather forecasting. The Cambridge team will collaborate in the major effort to model equations of semi-geostrophic flow, aswell as implementing the Lyapunov-exponents software to weather models.
