Summary on Grant Application Form |
A new type of compact, low-power, high-brightness X-ray generator and tube, with focusing mirror optics, will be installed on an existing four-circle diffractometer, with customisation involving the interfacing of the X-ray source to the diffractometer hardware and modification of the enclosure and radiation protection system. Optimum operating parameters for the generator on this typical single-crystal diffraction device will be established in collaboration with the equipment supplier. The equipment will be used to study a wide rang eof structural chemistry problems, especially where only small and otherwise weakly diffracting crystals are available. Topics of interest include various metal complexes with catalytic applications; nucleobase-drived ligands and their metal complexes; asymmetric synthesis and catalysis; bio-organic and medicinal chemistry; compounds of s-block elements including those related to 'super-bases'; calixarene complexes of metals; boryl compounds and the role of their metal complexes in catalysis; rigid-rod organic compounds with special properties; macropolyhedral cluster chemistry; and structural consequences of weak and secondary bonding.
