Summary on Grant Application Form |
The main goal of the research programme at Leeds University is to implement ion-diffusion waveguide fabrication using Nd-doped AlF3 glasses. In our previously funded EPSRC and EU research programmes, Nd-doped fluoroaluminate glasses and core/clad glass preform structures were developed for 1.3um amplifier. In this project, currently known and new glasses with blue-shifted emission near 1300 nm will be prepared for ion-diffused waveguide fabrication. The two main methods of ion-diffusion have already been developed at Leeds and these include thermal and gas-phase ion diffusion, and organic-solvent medium-assisted ion diffusion. In the former technique, ion diffusion is controlled via gas phase and it will be implemented via techniques described in the CASE FOR SUPPORT. It is aimed that the waveguide loss less than 0.5 dB/cm will be achieved via these techniques. Polished waveguides will be supplied for mode characterisation and device fabrication to ORC.
