Summary on Grant Application Form |
Free-space optics can provide communication bandwidths two to three orders of magnitude greater than that achievable using electrical transmission lines thus allowing he construction of parallel machines whose performance is not limited by network characteristicsThis proposal concerns the investigation of novel architectural enhancements enabled both by this capacity and by the use of distributed network intelligence within the optoelectronic interface. An example of this might be direct network support for load balancing operations. An important feature of such networks is the off-loading from the processor that may be achieved, thus freeing the processor for floating point work. This enhanced functionality will be made easily accessible to the programmer through the use of Shared Abstract Data Types to facilitate software generation and portability. The investigation will be carried with the support of simulation suite of three levels, optical, electronic and optoelectronic and system architecture and software abstraction. The proposal corresponds closely with the priorities highlighted in the Foresight programme key areas of optical technologies , and modelling and simulation.
