One of the central aims of materials science has been to understand the deformation behaviour of metals, polymers and ceramics across a range of scales. Despite our good understanding at the dislocation and macro-scales, our understanding across the meso-scale is still somewhat sketchy. This is in part because there is currently no technique with which one can 'observe' deformation behaviour within the bulk across this range of scales. Studies of the deformation of free surfaces have been undertaken but this has been limited by need to use markers, meshes, moire fringes or interferometric techniques. We aim to establish a strain mapping facility capable of mapping surface displacements and strains on unlabelled surfaces simply through the analysis of successive images obtained from photographic, video or scanning electron microscope input. With specimen translate procedures we will map at high resolution deformation processes across a range of scales 100nm - 10mm. We have already developed a new computational technique for measuring optical flow with high accuracy, and we now wish to extend the accuracy and scope of the technique and to investigate the utility of the method by applying it to a wide range of materials and components of engineering interest.
