Summary on Grant Application Form
This project studentship is requested in connection with a parellel application (GR/M23793) for an EPSRC Visiting Fellowship to enable Dr MG Zolotukhin of the Russian Academy of Sciences to work with the proposer for 12 months. The studies to be carried out by the student (for the first year in collaboration with the Visiting Fellow) will involve the investigation of new, heterogeneous step-growth synthesis of aromatic polymers, structural characterisation of the resulting materials and evaluation of their potential for industrial application. Potential applications include use as matrix materials in chemically-resistant separation membranes. The precipitation-polycondensation technique will be applied to the synthesis of (I) polymers containing MACROCYCLIC aromatic sub-units, permitting novel chain-extensions and cross-linking chemistry to be achieved, (ii) polymers containing extended aromatic pi-systems such as p-terphenyl and p-quaterphenyl, for evaluation as lyotropic and elelctroluminescent materials and (iii) hydrophilic polyketones containing pendant carboxyl groups as potential materials for reverse osmosis and nanofiltration membranes.
