Summary on Grant Application Form
This research intends to develop a novel non-destructive testing method for examining the degradation of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) in-situ during thermal cycling. A.C. impedance (ACI) methods, which have been used to study the electrical resistance and capacitance of solid and liquid materials, will be developed to characterise the microstructure of the TBC's. The microstructural development due to degradation of TBCs will be characterised by the change of impedance diagrams obtained from the ACI measurements. The results of the proposed research will lead to further developments of ACI methods in i) studying the failure mechanisms of TBCs, ii) predicting the lifetime of TBCs, iii) designing TBCs for general applications.
