Summary on Grant Application Form
A new network consisting of researchers of eight UK academic institutions, one European academic institution, three UK industrial organisations and one government research agency will be formed in order to promote collaborative research into the use of optical in-situ monitoring techniques designed for the study of semi conductor surface preparation and epitaxial growth. Underpinning the work will be the premise that the use of such techniques should be focussed upon aspects of growth or other surface treatment that result in (i) improved understanding of the nature of the surface modifications concerned and (ii) demonstrable improvements in the quality of the materials concerned/nature of the processing step without the need for the development of extensive new technology on the part of the industrial partners. Funding will be utilised to promote communication and information exchange, visits to partners laboratories, visits to growth/processing facilities via the industrial partners, limited conference attendance aimed at providing the network with specific information and the organisation of both closed (commercial in confidence) and open meetings in the UK for the dissemination of research materials. A small contribution toward network administration costs are also requested.
